New Strategy? Well, let’s say we have … adapted.
The irony here is that the general bar review courses have been using old MPT materials and lecturers for years to explain the California PT. (And save some money in the process.) But California’s PT – like its essays – has been more demanding and more layered. And so it promises to be into the near future.
You see, when it comes to test design, California has always been the leader. So, even though we now have a “90-minute test,” it will continue to be – first and foremost – an extremely well-crafted California Performance Test.

Bar prep is usually a one-size-fits-all – even when it doesn’t or shouldn’t.
And it doesn’t – or hasn’t – in California for two decades. (You can read any recent press release accompanying bar results or simply look at the Committee’s bar pass stats summary webpage. Either one will reference or recognize 1997 as the last great pass rate.) Nowadays, almost a half of test-takers fail the bar in the summer; and close to two-thirds fail the bar in the winter!
